Teaser Tuesdays (10)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- Be careful not to include spoilers (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)!
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!

I'm reading The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz right now, and enjoying it very much. Isabel Spellman is a great narrator and MC with a deadpan sense of humour (and she likes making lists). This week's teaser is an excerpt from her List of Ex-Boyfriends:
Ex-boyfriend #7:
Name: Greenberg, Zack
Age: 29
Occupation: Owner of web design firm
Hobby: Soccer
Duration: 1.5 months
Last Words: "You ran a credit check on my brother?"
I'm having so much fun with this book!

These two sentences are from The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle:

The long road hurried to nowhere and had no end. [...] Time had always passed her by in her forest, but now it was she who passed through time as she traveled.

I ♥ this book. It's utterly wonderful.

I haven't started The Last Unicorn yet and don't want to spoil myself looking for teasers, so this one is from The Heretic's Treasure by Scott Mariani.

Then he was waking in a panic and springing to his feet as the door of the apartment burst open and four heavily armed men crashed into the room.

Doesn't bode well for our hero, does it?

"From the tiny window of their room they could see the fowls in Ingram's yard underneath them all day, scratching, bustling, flying at the crusts and peelings flung out the kitchen door by Ingram's cook. The Thornhills would have fought the fows for those crusts, except that Mr Ingram's servant was always in the yard, and watched the Thornhills sourly, knowing what was in their minds."

From The Secret River by Kate Grenville (page 49).

Description: London, 1806 - William Thornhill, happily wedded to his childhood sweetheart Sal, is a waterman on the River Thames. Life is tough but bearable until William makes a mistake, a bad mistake for which he and his family are made to pay dearly. His sentence: to be transported to New South Wales for the term of his natural life. Soon Thornhill, a man no better or worse than most, has to make the most difficult decision of his life ...

I'm currently reading 16 Lighthouse Road by Debbie Macomber.

"I'll change," Olivia offered quickly, and left the room before Jack could protest. So much for a hot date.

I like this book so far - it's sweet and occasionally funny, as shown by the above quote.

This week's teaser is from The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, which I'm reading on my Kindle (sorry, had to make it 3 sentences):

I had weird dreams full of barnyard animals. Most of them wanted to kill me. The rest wanted food.

This week's teaser is from Ice Station by Matthew Reilly, a thriller I just started:
Wilkes Ice Station received no response to their distress signal.
Despite the fact that it was picked up by at least three different radio installations.

I'm still reading Inkspell by Cornelia Funke, but it's so beautifully written (even in translation) that I'm sure you won't mind another teaser from it.

Meggie said nothing. It was so quiet among the books, so terribly quiet among all those words.

It almost gives me the chills.

This week's teaser is from Inkspell by Cornelia Funke (I haven't actually started the book yet, so this is a surprise for me too!)

Hesitantly, Dustfinger took the sheet of paper. It was covered with fine, slanting handwriting, the letters tangled like thread.

I really want to go read now.

This week's teaser is from
Under Gemini by Rosamunde Pilcher:
Staring at her like a fool, a number of thoughts flew through Antony's mind. She was here, he had found her. She didn't look too furious. She had cut her hair.

She said, "Yes?" which was a funny thing for her to say, but then this was a funny situation.

Antony said, "Hello, Rose."

"I'm not Rose," said Rose.
