It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

READ LATELY

Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch
Guys, this book. I have no words. It's incredible. Locke and Jean are such amazing characters, and the plot is so full of twists and turns, you never know what's going to happen next. I was laughing, I was crying, I was at the edge of my seat and biting my nails ... in short, I loved it. I know I keep saying this, but you need to read the Gentleman Bastard series. Best fantasy series ever.

Bring Him Back by Scott Mariani
This is another prequel novella to the Ben Hope thriller series. It's fun reading about a young Hope and finding out what made him who he is today, but as always I wish these novellas were longer.

This was the first book off my summer TBR list. You can see what I thought of it here.

Serenity: Those Left Behind by Joss Whedon, Brett Matthews and Will Conrad
This is a graphic novel based on the brilliant but gone-too-soon TV series Firefly. The story is set in between the show and the movie Serenity. It was nice to visit that universe again, even in comic book format.

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
I have already read the first two books in the Inkheart trilogy, but I wanted to reread them before picking up the last book. This is a wonderful story about 12-year-old Meggie who loves books. Her father can read characters out of books but this is a dangerous ability to have.

Goodreads challenge status: Read 22 of 35 books – 5 books ahead of schedule.

CURRENTLY READING

I've started the second book in the Inkheart trilogy, Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. I've never read a series back to back before, I always break it up with other books in between, so it will be an interesting experience.

WHAT'S NEXT

Next I will pick up Inkdeath, the last book in the trilogy. I can't wait to see how it all ends. After that I'll probably choose another from my summer TBR list.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

READ LAST WEEK MONTH

I actually read 6 books in May, which is quite a lot for me. Alright, most were rather short, but I did read a total of 1300 pages, compared to 400 in April, so I'd say that's pretty good. :)

The Thousand Dollar Tan Line by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham
I adore the Veronica Mars TV series, and I was so excited about the new movie. This is the first in a book series that continues on from where the movie left off. The transition from screen to paper was smooth and the mystery kept me guessing until the end. In addition I was completely blindsided by a reveal that I did not expect to find in the books. But I'm always up for more Veronica Mars, no matter which medium, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Pacific Vortex! by Clive Cussler
This is the first Dirk Pitt book that Cussler wrote, but not the first one that was published. I can see why (not that The Mediterranean Caper is much better). Cussler's plots are usually highly entertaining, if far-reaching, but this story was pretty boring. Also, the female characters are just awful.

Coin Heist by Elisa Ludwig
This is a YA heist story about a gang of teenagers who decide to break into the US Mint. Review coming soon!

Passenger 13 by Scott Mariani
This is a prequel novella to the Ben Hope series. It was fun meeting a younger, less jaded Ben Hope and find out why he left the SAS. The plot is solid, except for maybe the ending, which felt a bit rushed. I'm sure this could have been expanded into a full-length novel.

Kickback by Garry Disher
This is the first in the Wyatt series, an Australian noir series about a bank robber. I enjoyed this story about the meticulous, quiet thief Wyatt, but since the series is fairly old it's unfortunately hard to find the rest of the books.

Break Out by Nina Croft
First in the Blood Hunter series. I was very excited about reading this book – space! thieves! prison break out! What's not to like? Unfortunately the answer is "a lot". I love the general premise of the story but sadly there was a lot less plot and a lot more sex than I was led to believe. I might have enjoyed it more if I'd actually liked the two main characters but as it was, I found them both simply irritating. And I think I've proved to myself once and for all that vampires just aren't my thing. I won't be seeking out the rest in this series.

Goodreads challenge status: Read 17 of 35 books – 3 books ahead of schedule.

CURRENTLY READING

I finally found the courage to pick up Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch. It's the second book in the Gentleman Bastard series, and those of you who have followed me for a while will know that I absolutely LOVE the first book, The Lies of Locke Lamora. I've been putting RSURS off for years now, because 1, I wanted to wait until the third book came out so I knew I wouldn't be left hanging, and 2, I think I was afraid that no sequel could ever live up to the awesomeness of Lies. I'm happy to say I was wrong on that last part. I'm about 100 pages in, but I was already sold after the first page. I can't tell you how much I love these books. The storylines, the language, the characters... It's all amazing and I can't believe I waited this long to go back to the world of Locke Lamora. I never want to leave again.

WHAT'S NEXT

Red Seas Under Red Skies is a big book so it will keep me occupied for a while (I don't even want to think about it ending!), but after that I'll probably either want to go straight for the next book in the series or read something completely different. I'm waiting for The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman to come in, so that's an option. Otherwise, we'll see where my mood takes me, as usual.

READ LAST WEEK
Since my last Monday post two weeks ago I've read Stiltskin by Andrew Buckley (read my review), a fresh spin on the classic fairy tales. Then Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple finally arrived in the mail, and I devoured it in just a couple of days, which is really fast for me (I seem to be reading a lot more and a lot faster this year, go me!). I absolutely loved it (read my review)! I also read Double Crossed by Ally Carter, a crossover between her Heist Society and Gallagher Girls series.

CURRENTLY READING
Double Crossed put me in an Ally Carter mood, so I picked up book 2 in the Gallagher Girls series, Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy. I waited until late last year to start the series because I didn't think I'd like it, but it turned out I was very much mistaken. :)

WHAT'S NEXT
I think I'll pick up the Inkheart trilogy by Cornelia Funke again. I've already read Inkheart and Inkspell, but it's been so long I want to re-read both of them before starting Inkdeath.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

I'm currently 2 books ahead of my Goodreads challenge - that hasn't happened in over a year! *proud* :)

READ LAST WEEK
Last week I read Tales of Beedle the Bard by JK Rowling. It was a quick and entertaining read; I particularly enjoyed Dumbledore's notes on each of the stories. I'm still sad I have no more new Harry Potter books to read.

I'm very excited about The Musketeers, a new TV series based on Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers which premiered on BBC One last night. I wanted to re-read Dumas' story but I was a bit intimidated by the size of it. Then I came across Death of a Musketeer by Sarah D'Almeida and the choice was easy. It is based on the characters from the original story and sees the musketeers and D'Artagnan trying to solve a murder mystery. It was an enjoyable story and I loved meeting the musketeers again. Read my review here.

CURRENTLY READING
I started Stiltskin by Andrew Buckley last night. It's a version of the classic fairy tales like no other I've ever come across and I'm loving it already.

WHAT'S NEXT
Still waiting for Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple and The Box of Red Brocade by Catherine Fisher. Hurry up, postman!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

New year, new chances to read more. I was nowhere near reaching my reading goal for last year, but after the holidays I feel re-energized and ready to delve into my books again! :)

READ LAST WEEK
If you've been following this blog for a while, you know I've been talking about finishing the Harry Potter series for ages. Well, I've finally done it. I read the last page of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows late last night. I never thought the series would have such a big impact on me when I started it about ten years ago, but truth is, I lay awake until the small hours of this morning thinking about it all. I'm really going to miss this series.

CURRENTLY READING
I wasn't quite ready to let go of Harry Potter's world, so I'm reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard right now. I expect I'll finish it tonight.

WHAT'S NEXT
I really want to read Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple because I've hear so many good things about it. I 'm also dying to read The Box of Red Brocade by Catherine Fisher, the sequel to The Obsidian Mirror, which I read last year and loved. I've ordered both these books but they haven't arrived yet, and I'm not sure what to read in the meantime. Do you know any good waiting books? ;)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

Time for a quick update on my reading. I'm still not reading as much as I would like, but here's what I've finished in the past few weeks:

READ LATELY
– Down and Dirty by Christine Bell, second in the Dare Me series. This romance novella was a quick read, and even though I'm not really into this genre, I have to admit that Christine's books are hot, hot, hot.
– The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke. I loved this children's book about a group of children living in an old abandoned cinema in Venice and their leader, a boy who calls himself the Thief Lord.
– Hammered by Kevin Hearne, third in the Iron Druid Chronicles. This urban fantasy series is a lot of fun, chock-full of mythical creatures in a modern day setting. This installment focuses on the Norse mythology, which I've been very interested in since I was a kid.
– The Bleiberg Project by David Khara (review coming soon!). Solid thriller by a French author.

CURRENTLY READING
The Orphanage of Miracles by Amy Neftzger. I'm only one chapter in but so far it's very interesting and I can't wait to see what will happen. It's been described as middle grade fantasy, but I think it will appeal to older readers as well.

WHAT'S NEXT
I'm going on holiday next week and will have plenty of time to read, so hopefully I'll be able to get through a couple of books. I don't have any particular titles lined up, but I'm taking Pickwick (my Kindle) so I'll have plenty to choose from. :)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

I haven't done of these this year for the simple reason that I haven't read many books. That doesn't mean I haven't been reading though - it just means I've read one very long book. This is my books so far this year:

READ LATELY
Inspired by the movie I read The Hobbit in December, and decided to embark on a reread of The Lord of the Rings (in Norwegian) while I was still in the mood. It took me all of January and February to get through it, but I finally finished all 1000+ pages. It may have taken me two months, but it's still a lot quicker than the first time I read it 10 years ago, when I spent nearly one and a half years on it (reading other books in between, of course). I think I enjoyed it more this time around, and it didn't feel nearly as slow as I remembered. I'm happy I took the time to read it again.

After the brick I needed something light so I read The Magic Mirror and the Seventh Dwarf by Tia Nevitt (my review), which is a clever retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. On a whim, and because it had been collecting dust in my bookcase for far too long, I also picked up Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones. It's the first book by her I've read but it won't be the last.

CURRENTLY READING
I hardly ever buy a book with the intention of reading it straight away, but I did yesterday with the Kindle edition of Down and Dirty by Christine Bell. I had been struggling with deciding what to read next and I knew this one would be a hot nice and quick read.

WHAT'S NEXT
Like I said I've been having a hard time deciding on a new read since finishing LOTR. It's stupid really; I have hundreds of unread books but I can't find one that interests me enough to pick it up. Perhaps you have any suggestions? I'm looking for something not too heavy that will grab me from the first few pages.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

Wow, I haven't done one of these since May! Even though I haven't been reading that much lately, it's time to catch up:

READ LATELY
Hounded (my review) and Hexed by Kevin Hearne, the first 2 books in the Iron Druid Chronicles, a very entertaining and action-packed urban fantasy series. In addition I read Clan Rathskeller and Kaibab Unbound, which are two short stories set before the first novel.

I also read Her Majesy's Will by David Blixt, a historical fiction novel in which Shakespeare (quite by accident) was a spy before he became know as a playwright. I have yet to write a review of this one, but I will, because it was a very enjoyable read.

In between I've also read The Big Book of Top Gear 2009, which is "just like on the telly except it's a book."

CURRENTLY READING
I started re-reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night, because it felt like the thing to do.

WHAT'S NEXT
As usual, no idea. I should probably pick up Les Miserables again though.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

READ LAST WEEK
Last week I read a book in Norwegian for a change (haven't done that in a year or so). Nattmannen by Jørn Lier Horst is book 5 in an excellent detective series featuring Chief Inspector William Wisting. So far only book 6 in the series, Dregs, has been translated into English, but hopefully the rest will follow soon.

CURRENTLY READING
A while ago I won the first three books in the Jack Susko series by Lenny Bartulin from Booklover Book Reviews (thank you, Jo!). They attracted me for two reasons: The main character owns a used book store, and they are set in Sydney, my favourite city in the world, so I was delighted to be able to read them. I have started the first book, A Deadly Business (it has later been renamed Death By the Book) and so far it's pretty good. The best part is that Jack's book store is situated only two blocks from where I lived in Sydney, so I know the area quite well. Being able to picture the locations in my mind makes for a much more vivid reading experience. (It also makes me miss Sydney a whole lot...)

WHAT'S NEXT
As usual I don't have anything particular planned - but I don't think it will be a mystery.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

READ LAST WEEK
Last week I finished As You Do: Adventures With Evel, Oliver and the Vice President of Botswana by Richard Hammond and loved it. Read my review here.

CURRENTLY READING
I spent three days deciding what to read after As You Do, and ended up with Raise the Titanic by Clive Cussler. His Dirk Pitt adventures are a guilty pleasure of mine, and the only series of which I own all the books.

WHAT'S NEXT
Given my latest track record, I spend more time trying to decide what to read than actually read... I don't know why that is, because I have so many books I want to read - just not always at that exact moment I finish another book. Anyway, I think it  might be time for a fantasy next.

READ LAST WEEK
Last week I finished Master of None by Sonya Bateman, a highly entertaining urban fantasy debut.

CURRENTLY READING
I'm in a bit of a Top Gear phase at the moment (marathons on BBC Entertainment will do that to you), so I picked up As You Do: Adventures With Evel, Oliver and the Vice President of Botswana by Richard Hammond. It is a behind-the-scenes account of some of the bigger Top Gear adventures like the North Pole race and the Botswana challenge. I'm only about a quarter into it, but so far I've had strange looks from at least two people because I was giggling like a madwoman. I've found that reading a few pages in the morning is a great way to start the day, because it puts me in a good mood.

WHAT'S NEXT
I loved Master of None, so perhaps I'll move on to the second book in the series, Master and Apprentice. Or maybe I'll continue the Riyria Revelations with Avempartha by Michael J. Sullivan. Then again I really want to start the Rizzoli & Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. And a friend lent me a Jo Nesbø which I really should read soon. And then... You get the picture. Too many books!

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

READ SO FAR IN 2012
My first read of the year was The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan. I've heard so many good things about the Riyaria Revelations series, and now that all six books are out I decided to start it. This first installment was fast-paced, action-packed and fun, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I've also read The Shadow Project by Scott Mariani, which is the fifth book in a thriller series featuring ex-SAS Major Ben Hope. I have a weak spot for daring heroes, and Ben is one of my favourites.

CURRENTLY READING
After reading Stella @ Ex Libris' excellent review of Master of None by Sonya Bateman last year I added it to my wishlist and was RAKed it by Bookaholic Does Blogging soon after (thanks, Ashley!). This is the first book in an urban fantasy series (with a male protagonist, I might add!), and after it had been waiting on Pickwick (my Kindle) for a while, I'm so glad I finally started it. I'm 1/4 in and so far I've cringed twice and laughed out loud a lot more times. I'm enjoying it very much!

WHAT'S NEXT
As usual I have no idea. I like to pick up whatever fancies me at the time. However, I do have a list of books I want to get to soon so I'm sort of organised. ;)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

I'm reading again!!

After hitting a reading slump that lasted about four months, I have finally found the joy of reading again. And it feels wonderful! :) I still don't know why I suddenly lost all interest in reading, but it doesn't really matter now and I'm not going to over-analyze it. Suffice it to know that I've read two great books in the past couple of weeks and really enjoyed them - so much so, in fact, that I stayed up until almost 3 AM this morning to finish one of them. I've been yawning all morning, but it was worth it.

Here's what I've read lately:

Murder in the 11th House by Mitchell Scott Lewis
This was a review book that took me forever to read. I never really connected with the main character, which is why I think I wasn't too excited about picking it up again once I'd put it down. Read my review here.

Sapphique by Catherine Fisher
I read Incarceron around this time last year and really liked it, so when I started feeling like I wanted to read again I decided the sequel might be a good place to start - easy to read, exciting and with characters I already knew (plus I had to read it before I forgot everything that happened in the previous book). I don't think I'll be writing a review for this as I never reviewed Incarceron, but I like this series a lot. There's non-stop action, a brilliant setting and great supporting characters. I'd absolutely recommend it if you like YA fantasy/dystopia.

The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen
This is the one that kept me up all night last night. I just couldn't put it down, it was that enchanting. And it has the most adorable cover. Review will be up soon.

Now the big question is, what to read next? I'm terrified of picking up something I'll end up not enjoying and falling into another reading slump. I think I'll look for something short and sweet just to be sure I won't put it down and not pick it up again. I love reading right now, but it somehow feels a little fragile, like the joy might disappear again without warning. It sounds silly but I can't help it.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

FINISHED LAST WEEK
Nothing! I'm falling further and further behind on my reading challenge and if I don't start reading soon, I won't be able to catch up. I know challenges don't mean anything, but I'm competitive. ;)

CURRENTLY READING
I put aside No One Lives Twice by Julie Moffett to read a review book, Murder in the 11th House by Mitchell Scott Lewis. It's about an astrological private detective, which in itself sounds like an interesting plot. Unfortunately I'm 1/4 into the book and it still hasn't grabbed me. It's a pretty short book so I'm sure I'll finish it anyway.

WHAT'S NEXT
I'm tempted to forget about review books and other books on my "must read soon" list and just finish the Harry Potter series. I also want to read more books by Norwegian authors. I have always hated required reading, maybe that's why I haven't been reading much lately; because I've been reading books I have to read instead of books I want to read.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

It's cold and rainy here today – perfect weather for curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea and a book. The summer flew by, but I'm actually looking forward to cosy autumn nights with candles and blankets. Not to mention that Christmas is less than four months away. I need to get started on those Christmas cards soon (I always say this, but does it happen? Nope).

FINISHED LAST WEEK
I read Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis, a supernatural detective story that I ended up really liking despite not being a big fan of the supernatural genre. This one however, was a lot different from everything else I've read so far (maybe I just haven't been reading the right books?). Review coming very soon.

CURRENTLY READING
No One Lives Twice by Julie Moffett, first in the Lexi Carmichael series. Lexi is a computer geek who works for the government and gets herself into all sorts of trouble. So far it's been a light and funny read and I really like Lexi.

WHAT'S NEXT
The most likely candidate is The Magicians by Lev Grossman, although there are at least ten other books fighting for my attention. Once again I wish I was a faster reader.

Are you sad summer is almost over, or do you look forward to autumn like me?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

As I touched upon in my monthly summary post yesterday, I have been a very bad book blogger lately. I have been buried in work the past few weeks and I've had no energy left for blogging at night. But it should start to calm down this week, and then hopefully I'll have time to read and review some great books. I miss reading - and all of you guys!

FINISHED LAST WEEK
Since the last Monday post two weeks ago I have finished the newest Sigma Force novel, The Devil Colony by James Rollins. Like all books in the series it is a scientific thriller, but this time the exact science went a little over my head. Good thing there are explosions and guns too. ;) Expect a review later this week.

CURRENTLY READING
I'm reading Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis, the first book in a new paranormal detective series. This is the kind of paranormal stuff I can like; where vampires are actually scary and demons are not something to be messed around with. I'm about a quarter into the book and I really enjoy it so far.

WHAT'S NEXT
Either No One Lives Twice by Julie Moffett or The Magicians by Lev Grossman, depending on my mood. I have review copies of the sequels to both books, and as I hate reading series out of order, I want to start at the beginning with both series.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

I'm sure you have all heard about the tragedy that hit my peaceful little country over the weekend. I won't say too much about it because everything that can be said has already been said, and in much better ways that I can say it. I just want to extend my condolences to everyone who lost a loved one these past few days. My heart breaks for you. I will always remember the words of one of the survivors from Utøya: "If one man can show so much hatred, imagine how much love we can show together."

Show some love today. You will make the world a better place.

Yesterday was my birthday, and to celebrate a little I'm having a birthday giveaway here on the blog. It's open internationally, and you can win a book of your choice! Enter here until 31 July.

I had a nice, quiet birthday at home. Mum made me pancakes and Dad came home from a fishing trip with some coalfish, so I'm happy. The fish is delicious warm, but even better cold with potatoes, cucumber and sour cream. Yummy!

I don't have much to report in bookish news. I'm still reading The Devil Colony by James Rollins. I thought maybe it would be strange to read a thriller after last Friday's events, but I found reading fiction actually helped. I'll finish it this week, and then it's onto another review book, Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis. I hear it's good, so I'm looking forward to it.

A little different format for this meme today, but I hope you understand. Take care of each other out there.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.

I finally found my reading mojo again last week and what happened? I got swamped with projects at work so I hardly have time to read at all the next few weeks. Hrmph.

FINISHED LAST WEEK
It took me almost 3 weeks, but I finished my re-read of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling. I really regret not finishing the series years ago, because with the last film coming out it was impossible to avoid spoilers unless I moved into a cave in the mountains for a while (and I appreciate modern comforts too much to do that). So now I know all sorts of things I didn't want to know until I had read the last two books. Oh well, perhaps it's better to know what's coming so I can prepare myself for the turmoil?

CURRENTLY READING
I'm about a fourth of the way into the newest Sigma Force novel, The Devil Colony by James Rollins. So far this scientific thriller is very good.

WHAT'S NEXT
I'm thinking it will be Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis, the first in a new paranormal detective series that sounds intriguing.
